Alright guys so I had an older house that i bought and I’ve been upgrading some things and wanted to add ethernet ports into the house for access to my home network(movies and shows).
So I have my Verizon router (wifi) in my basement that is connected to my server, x1 and I’ve ran a 100ft ethernet cable up to my attic. In my attic I placed an old wifi router that is broadcasting my same wireless network so I have good connectivity throughout the whole house and it works wonders.
Sorry for the long explanation but want to cover it all…
The Issue:
I have four rooms that I want to run ethernet from the upstairs second router but only 3 available ports. If I bought a switch like this one Amazon can i plug that into the router then use those ports to drop it down to the wall sockets? My only concern is with it having to go through a switch and two routers can my computers all see each other?
I’m assuming that and was gonna try it anyway but I wasn’t sure since the switch relies on one ehternet going to a router but would have 2-3 things running on it at once if you get what I mean.
Well no matter how you are running the ethernet wires as long as they connect to your router everything should work fine no matter how many “things” are running on it at once. The one wire that is connecting to the Netgear Desktop Switch to your Verizon modem will allow every device that is connected through the ethernet cables to work just fine. As for your main concern about your computers all seeing each other, I really don’t get what you mean by that.
They are all networked together and a friend of mine said it I had two routers connected to each other that the one pc might not see the other one(it needs to see the server so it can get a movie file).
I was just looking for some re-assurance because I figured it should all work together.
In theory a switch acts as a switchboard/An extender. So you wouldn’t have a problem with LAN as they’d all share the same mutual static IP and they’d all change together because of the source of the Internet. The only part that would change this is a router, which you already have set up. It should work fine. Just be wary of using another router. A switch will be fine, but the moment you get another router with a different password as an extender that’s when things start to become complicated. Of course test it though. Don’t go drilling any holes before you test a switch. Go to the store, buy one, keep the receipt, hook it up in the attic, see how it works then either decide to get a refund or to start using the Phillips drillbits. Good luck mate.
Not as far as I know. An extreme amount of workplaces have local area networks whilst using switches that can have over 150mb speed capability. Most universities for example will have them set up so the connection can remain the same throughout a workplace.
Thanks guys, I already have the holes drilled and the wall ports mounted, just wanted to double check it all because I was a bit confused with the setup I had planned and probably over thought.
