Connection speed capped by Xbox LIVE?

Someone on Se7ensins brought this up, so I did a test myself. I’m pretty annoyed with this considering I pay for 50MB internet and Xbox LIVE allows my console to get about 2MB speeds…

Will you guys run some tests and post results? The site I used to test on the console was SpeedOf.Me, HTML5 Speed Test and Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test on my PC.

Here’s my result:

It’s probably the Xbox’s limitations. Are you wireless or ethernet? Also, it wouldn’t make sense if Xbox LIVE is limiting it other than possible security concerns (Not sure what kind, just in general).

Wired. They shouldn’t have limitations on a speed…it’s 2012 lol.

I agree, but I get 20mb/s on my speed test and when I download anything on my PC it only gives me 2mb/s

Putting a cap on speed limits stress on their server, why wouldn’t they do it? Seems smart to me. Also, I think the IE results are wrong. Maybe its only capped in the browser.

Because the site you’re downloading from doesn’t support higher speeds.
I easily get 8mb/sec on uTorrent and Steam.

Maybe. I used the same speed test site on my PC via IE as well. Got better results. I can see a stress prevention, but that’s a lot of capping. 50MB down to 2MB is a hefty drop for me.

I’m sure it increases for downloads, but gaming wise you probably won’t notice a difference.
Capping upload might prevent the appropriate person from getting host though.

This was on my pc

Pretty sure the xbox one is in MegaBytes, where as speedtest.net defaults to megabits.
Though, even if this is the case there’s still a large difference in the speeds.

Don’t be jealous of my connection  (PC)

No both of the tests he did were in Megabits. That is the standard for how internet speeds are measured.
MB Megabyte
Mb Megabit

I would never expect to get full speeds on XBL. The cut you show there is pretty drastic, and disappointing, but they do have a lot of players to deal with.

On the downs I get 8.52 Mbps and on the ups I get 0.99 Mbps. Admitably it is by no means the best, but by hell do I suffer on an American host, it’s actually quite comical that you can traverse the corridor of Lockdown before your Semtex can sometimes lol

Xbox definatly monitors the speed at which online players send and recieve information. The biggest notice is with the modern warefare and black ops games.
Now before I write down examples please realize I know there are amazing gamers out there that just kick ass on these games, BUT!!!
If you play these games and watch killcams alot you will notice that some kills are just spray and pray, some are damn dropshots (LOL), and some you will notice that they seem to have a lock on the other player, especially if the killcam shows douple of triple kills. The gunn just seems to pop from enemy to enemy and be dead on shots. This is all due to the aim assist feature, and yes it does work online depending on your connection and where you live in north america.
You will notice from playing overtime that some players seem to just pull the left trigger and shoot. And you stand no chance at all. They have a fraction of a second ahead of you and there aim assist is deadly.
Myself on the other hand has vertually no aim assist because of my location and internet connection. I used to have high speed internet and these things drove me nuts and believe me its a very short drive. So I decided to pay a small fortune for the fastest internet I could possibly get here where I live. I subscribed to fiber optic 70/30 internet. This internet is crazy fast as I can upload or download a movie in no time flat. BUT!!! Once again, I noticed my connection on the previous mentioned games got worse and not better. I had more of a lag and my aim assist sucked even worse than before.
So after alot of research on the problem I had found out that if you have crazy fast internet, xbox actually uses lag compensation so you wont have an advantage on the other players. But because of where I live, the lag compensation made things worse.
Now like I said. I do realize that there are great playerson modern warefare and blackops but location and connection plays a huge role on your gameplay. If your just a moderatly skilled gamer but live in the perfect location and have the perfect internet you are going to kick some serious butt.
I also know that alot of gamers would disagree with me but I have spent a very long time and money trying to make my online gameplay a little better and I have researched alot of forums gathering information to support these statments.
Just watch the killcams more often if you are having these problems. It will explain alot.
I do however, believe tha if mocrosoft wanted to sink just a fraction of his billions into sme new towers across North America it would make gameplay alot better for everyone. But I dont think they care. We are still buying right?
I am sorry for babbling on guys on the subject but I do hope this helped some of you. Take care!!!

Maybe you have a setting on your router to distribute bandwidth for your speed? For example I designate about half to my xbox, a little more than a 1/4 to my computer and a little to wireless devices and the rest to my family computer. So if that was the case it would explain the difference.

Its not often you see posts this in-depth from new members, if only all new members were like this.

As far as my settings I have opened and closed ports, had everything set to just my xbox, set the numbers to the correct xbox connection. And even went as far as to remove everything except my xbox from my internet connection.
And last but not least, I had paid two techs to come into my home to try a few adjustments and still no better. I just think its all in location, location, location. Just like buying a house!!! LOL
Also, thank you for the kind words!!!

hey Icealong, check out my custom controller!!!

I just checked it:
My normal connection:
50 down, 10 up
on the xbox:
5 down 5up

Same thing is happening to me. I’m hard wired and when I plug my comp in and run the test on speedtest.net and bandwidthplace.com they say I am running 88 down and 30 up(what I pay for). Then I unplug my comp and plug my Xbox back in and run the test on bandwidthplace.com(not speedtest.bet bc it uses flash) and it always says my DL is around 7 and Upload around 9 Mbps. Have tried everything in terms of router settings/disabling wireless and wired devices with the same results. Would love to see someone figure this out… Been a headache ever since we upgraded
